Third place: Chick on Tundra, by Hannah Beutler, of Seward.

“A fishing boat was heading into Sealing Cove Harbor in Sitka at the end of the day,” Lione Clare said of her winning image. “I was photographing the breathtaking sunset when it entered my viewfinder so I snapped a shot, capturing its silhouette against the dramatic setting sun.”

Since 2007, the North Pacific Research Board has organized a photo contest celebrating images of coastal or ocean seascapes or sea life within U.S. waters from the Gulf of Alaska, Prince William Sound, the Aleutian Islands, Bering Sea or Beaufort/Chukchi Seas. This year’s photo contest winners were selected from a pool of 145 entries. The entries covered subjects from plankton to people and everything in between, including seabirds, fish and marine mammals. Submissions were judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact and artistic merit. The judging panel consisted of professional photographers, graphic designers, NPRB Board members and staff.

Photo contest finalists will be featured on the NPRB website and in a 2014 calendar that will be available for free to the public in January.
